I have been born profoundly deaf and cannot hear any sounds from both ears. When I was three years old, after CI fund raising, I got it hooked up sometime in June, 1990 and relied heavily on CI since. It is only recently that I have heard that there are people getting second implant. Back in fourth grade and later, I thought that a second one would be cool but not possible... It's been lurking in my mind since then. But to my surprise, since in 2000, people are getting a second one! (I really need to keep up with the technological world, but it's so hard with the pace it is at!) I really would love to get a second implant and I know it will be full of surprises. One of the major reasons why I want/need to get a second one is because I have difficulty in localizing the sounds. With my eyes progressing getting worse, it is taking me a lot longer to find the speaker. I've been looking into BCI for the last month and each time I did, my confidence and the need grew to get the second BCI. I know this is a decision I will not regret. The only obstacles I am facing is getting it done during winter hols as I am in College now and the insurance... I don't know if medicaid will pay or not. If not, then hopefully my step-father's navy insurance will add me to the list. I really hope to get hooked up before my second year in college. Thank you to all who shared their stories with us! It's very ... I don't know the word is, but amazing!

As I understand Medicaid has been pretty flexible for the first CI. I am a medical biller and collector. I do both Masshealth and Medicare. Which I dont think it will be a problem. Your team at what hosptial you are in. Should be doing a extensive letter of the benefits you will reap with bilateral. If you are not sure still. I can try to make some phone calls and get what state you are from. Since Medicaid is run different from state to state. Kathy

Posts: 16 (09/23/05 19:15:55) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I know for a fact that in Florida Medicaid does not cover anymedical treatment for hearing, eyes or dental cept for those under the age of 18. Then two years ago they cut out all hearing and eyes. Reason I know that is I was right at the stage of having them pay for the surgery when the govern passed those new changes and I was tranferred to Vocational Rehab and after agreeing to all their terms was approved and ta da!!! Got the CI and loving every minute of it.

I have a cochlear implant in my left ear and a hearing aid in my right ear.I had my sugery on October 10th and i was hooked up on Novermber 14th. I was profound i can't rember when i was profound sorry. So i've had my implant for 5 months. I have a question for all of you. How long did it take you to get used to the implant? But to be totally comfortable with what I had for a Program and mapping maybe a year. Im looking forward to be hooked up on my bilateral on the April 27th. Since the new freedom offers such program to enchanced on circumstance sounds such as a carnival or a bar. Ill be Bilateral on that day!!

My blind brother was implanted with a Nucleus 23(?) about 10 years ago. At that time he still had partial hearing with the left ear. He had been studying Piano up until this time, and continues to play classical music using Braille Music Scores instead of Printed musical scores. Over the past 9 or ten years, his left ear with the HA has lost almost all functional hearing. Without the analog hearing from the HA, with only the CI, he has lost the pitch perception he once had with the analog HA. Now when he plays, he can't tell if he is playing the correct note. He has to play by touch, not by hearing. He can't tell if he is playing the right notes by ear, so does not play in groups or duets, only solos. It was suggested that an up-to-date bilateral implant would not only give him directional awareness that would be most valuable for a blind person, it would also improve his perception of musical tone, so that he could recognize melody and maybe even recognize different musical instruments. I wonder if any bilateral CI advocates are musically astute to the extent they can: 1. tell what note is being played? 2. recognize different instruments? 3. Are you able to recognize different chords such as Cm, C7, C9, Cm7, Cdim, Csus, Caug, etc? 4. can you play along by ear while listening to a piece of music? 5. Is there a particular CI that is best for Musicians? 6. Is the safety consideration of directional perception for a blind man, a valid reason to justify insurance coverage? However, I am not what you are looking for as far as musical knowledge. I can tell you this, from my standpoint. I have been bilateral only for two months so far. From week one after being turned on my second implant. I have to say having both does increase the music tens times. I cant explain it in details. All I know, when I play with each individually and then both on my favorite songs. The music and more tones comes out together. Its truly amazing. I hope this helps. I dont know if what I can is the same for others. Kathy

I have a Clarion that was implanted about nine years ago, now it seems I qualify for the other ear to be done also. I like my Clarion but it doesn't fully capture the low sounds. Everyone sounds like Mickey or Minnie Mouse. I wonder if there is some ongoing data collection as to which CI has the greatest success? Thanks again.

However,, there are reports regarding to bilateral effectivness. If you want that I can get that to you. Again, that is a brand war as anything in the consumer end. I agree there should be something to show the statistics. At this time there is not one for that matter. I hope that helps. Kathy

I did qualify for a second implant just this past week and do want to get it. I am leaning towards the Nucleus Freedom BTE. I had the 1st implant in my good ear (left) March 2006..I was born profoundly deaf and have been using HA in both ears and and have a very good speech ability from my family and mainstreaming in public schools...I am still waiting for the confirmation from the BC/BS that the hospital was paid for the last surgery...however they told me I should be able to have the 2nd implant with no problem...My doctor wanted to make sure he is paid for the last surgery before making an time for the 2nd surgery...I will call them today and find out... I love this CI--I was amazed at how well I adapted to it and would not take it off expect when I go to bed..ha! I was happy to hear most of the environmental sounds such as the water roaring down the creek after a winter's thaw and recognizing that sound after only 10 mos of CI!!! I hear birds all the time and I am not straining to listen to them now like i was last year...I am listening to audio tapes and books and I can hear alot of the words--it takes time and patience but it works...I love listening to music when I am driving to work and back home...before the implant--I would have to turn the music off even with both HA on because it was so loud and not making any senses...now with the CI I just change the channel until I find a song that suits me...I am wondering if the 2nd implant will be great for me...I am thinking it will be from reading all your stories...I still have trouble with the location of the sounds... I have been deaf in my left ear since I was a child, don't recall ever hearing on the left. My right ear worked perfect until the past year, I woke up and it was gone...some virus. Anyhow I had the implant done on my right because I was afraid that my left side wouldn't remember speech very well. I am considering the bilateral but I'm wondering how confusing it would be initially, what are the bad points vs. good points? Anyone???
